Chronicles of Ekos
Theles was the battleground of the battle between the dark elves and kingdoms of men. As such, it still bears the scars of battle on its landscape. It was also the harshest on magic users after the cataclysm, killing or imprisoning any who showed the slightest magical aptitude.
It was Theles who formed the Witch Hunters, a merciless organisation who travel the land seeking those who show magical ability and branding them as sorcerers. Their victims would be shackled with a null-brand, a magical enchantment which limits their magical ability, although usually with the side affect of loss of mental faculty. In the days after the cataclysm they had their work cut out for them, the outpouring of magical energies manifested abilities in many people.
Nowadays the witch hunters are less prevalent, only seeking those that abuse their power, or fail to register their abilities with the magical colleges. However their organisation is still feared throughout the country and magic and mages are treated with suspicion. Many parents from Theles would rather abandon or even kill a child who showed arcane ability, rather than face the stigma of harbouring a magic user.
The nation is ruled by a Magistar, who presides over a Senate made up of the heads of important families, city mayors and various organisations across the land, including the Witch Hunters.
